Makay Trekking

Day 1: Antananarivo – Miandrivazo

The Malagasy Tours team meets you at your hotel.

Departure southward. Right outside Antananarivo, rice fields and characteristic highland villages shape the landscape. At Ambatolampy, we take a break and discover the remarkable craftsmanship of aluminum cooking-pot manufacturers — the pots found throughout Madagascar.

Lunch in town. We then continue via Antsirabe and drive to Miandrivazo, where we spend the night.

Day 2: Miandrivazo – Malaimbandy – Makay

Drive to Malaimbandy, where a track leads us to the northern base of the Makay Massif after a 4- to 6-hour drive. This is the starting point of the expedition.

Here we meet our guides and porters, who will accompany us during these wonderful days in the mountains. We set up our tents at the edge of the village.

Days 3 to 7: Trek in Northern Makay

We have good knowledge of the southern and central parts of Makay, but we are particularly impressed by this area. We guide you through huge, sheer canyons where sunlight rarely reaches the ground, and extraordinary plants grow along the walls. We have discovered several traces of large crocodiles here.

The Sakapaly River runs through these mountains, and we “navigate” inside the canyons, setting up our camps on the white sandbanks.
